Woman says you should wash hairbrush every two weeks – and shows gross results

There are plenty of items around the house that keep us busy giving them regular cleans – from the shower to the floors.

But how often do you clean your hairbrush?

And we don’t just mean removing the excess strands of hair from the bristles.

According to TikTok user Jessica Haizman, we should all be properly cleaning our hairbrushes every two weeks, giving them a good wash in the sink to remove the build-up of dirt and grime.

Jessica, a cleaning and organisation fan, shared her process for washing her brushes with her 898,000 followers on the social media platform and the results were really gross.

In the clip, she says: “Ever cleaned your hairbrushes?

“Realistically you’re supposed to clean your hairbrushes once every two weeks.

“I started by pulling out as much hair as I could and then I gave them a bath.”

Jessica ran water in the sink and added some baking soda and some shampoo.

She worked the mixture into the hairbrushes, before leaving them to soak for 30 minutes.

“Immediately the water started turning brown and gross,” she added, clarifying that she doesn’t dye her hair or use much product in it.

To finish off, Jessica rinsed the brushes thoroughly and left them to air dry.

The video has been viewed more than five million times and garnered over 905,000 likes.

Thousands also commented to share their thoughts, with many disturbed by this information.

One person wrote: “Oh god… I’ve had the same brush for the last 10-15 years.”

Another said. “OMG I never thought about doing this. Doing it now.”

“Ewww! This is why I buy new brushes every now and then,” proclaimed a third.

Someone else replied: “I’ve never cleaned my brush.”

Others warned people to be careful when washing to avoid mould building up behind the pad of the brush, while some thought baking soda wasn’t all that great for the skin due to PH value, so urged people to wash it off completely.
